Evoking fire and feminine strength through illustration
Commissioned by the London Indian Film Festival, I created an original illustration inspired by ‘In Flames’, a Cannes selected supernatural thriller by Zarrar Khan. The artwork was used across social media and printed as postcards for screenings. After watching the film, I developed concept sketches exploring themes of womanhood, grief, and resistance, eventually refining one into a final piece that channels the raw emotional intensity of the film.
Working in Procreate, I crafted a digital illustration using muted, fiery tones and grainy textures to evoke a vintage, moody aesthetic. Symbolism runs deep: iron bars, watchful eyes, and a mother-daughter duo engulfed in flames communicate cultural oppression and generational trauma. The colour green, subtly threaded through the piece, pays homage to Pakistani identity. This project highlighted my strengths in emotional storytelling, conceptual depth, and powerful, cinematic visual design.
“Beautifully evocative and incredibly thoughtful. the illustration captured the emotional core of ‘In Flames’ perfectly. It resonated strongly with audiences at our screenings and on social media. A powerful piece that added depth to our campaign.”
