Weaving culture and colour into a

story of resilience and hope

HarperCollins entrusted me with the design and illustration of the cover and interior artwork for Unsettled, the debut Middle Grade novel by Reem Faruqi. My goal was to create visuals that not only stood out but also deeply resonated with the story’s themes. Using a bright, bold yet warm colour palette, I aimed to encapsulate the vibrancy of Pakistani culture while weaving in key elements of Nurah’s journey. The cover design highlights her love for swimming, a central part of her identity, while also reflecting the rich textures and colours of her heritage.

To add depth and authenticity, I incorporated intricate henna patterns throughout the artwork, a cultural tradition that symbolises connection and celebration. These details helped unify the illustrations, creating a seamless visual experience that feels both personal and immersive. Working on Unsettled allowed me to combine my passion for storytelling with my expertise in illustration and design, bringing a unique perspective to a narrative that celebrates identity, resilience, and belonging.

“Soumbal’s work on Unsettled was brilliant. She brought the story to life with a vibrant, thoughtful design that perfectly captured its heart. A joy to collaborate with – creative, professional, and deeply invested in the project.”
